Ready and Waiting

Wednesday, September 4,

Ready and waiting, waiting, waiting, the little brown truck finally showed up about 5 pm. It must have been his last stop of the day! But once delivered, we wasted no time in saying let’s go!

Our first stop was 30 miles down the road at Taco Bell, then on to the rest stop at the bottom of Ladd Canyon, just before LaGrande, Oregon where we pulled in to spend the night.

It wasn’t far to go today, but will make it a little shorter day tomorrow.

Around midnight we were startled awake by a very loud clap and rumble of thunder, and for about an hour and a half we were bombarded with thunder, lightning, heavy rain and very gusty winds. It finally settled down so we could get back to sleep.

Thursday, September 5

After a lot of miles and hours in the vehicles, we arrived at Fort Stevens State Park, Warrenton, Oregon. We rushed right into the registration building and found they had two side by side spots for four nights, so we snapped those up for three nights. We will go back in on Sunday and get different sites for during the week since one of these is reserved for next week.  After Labor Day during the week it isn’t hard to get sites, but weekends are always booked tight here, and there are over 500 spaces.

So we parked the Flintstone mobile and went back into Warrenton to Fred Meyer to pick up a few things we had not brought with us, and for the guys to get fishing licenses for next week. On the way back we stopped at the local library to check out their book sale. We had about 10 minutes to make a quick search, and picked up several paperbacks for 50 cents each, and some old magazines for free.

Then we drove out to the beach overlook to have haystacks for dinner. It was raining, so we didn’t get outside on the beach, and finally had a pretty good electrical storm, so headed back to the campground.

The host in our loop told us it should rain part of the day tomorrow and then start clearing up. He said fishing has been good this year, so we hope it stays that way and maybe we can get a piece of the action.
